Adopt me!

Today the “Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet” stamp series goes on sale.

There are about 4-6 million animals euthanized by U.S. animal shelters each year because homes are not available. That works out to about 13,600 pets a day.

What do you think about adoption of pets from shelters? Do any of you have pound puppies? Comment here.

I've adopted several cats from our local shelter. I tell everyone to spay and neuter their pets so we won't be forced to euthanize 13,000animals every day. Having a litter of kittens or puppies is NOT good for your females and is NOT a necessary experinece for your children. Both male and female dogs and cats are much happier and healthier when they
are spayed and neutered - it's a scientific fact.

My pets are all spayed/neutered, however, I'd like the previous commentor to cite the reference that shows that it's a scientific fact that dogs and cats are happier when they are spayed and neutered. Did the animals in this study actually admit to that?

I got my beautiful cat Zoe at the pound 8 years ago. There are so many healthy, wonderful dogs and cats in the pound. They all deserve better and we all can open our homes to at least one of these wonderful, blood-pressure lowering family members.

I've had dogs all my life and just recently adopted for the first time. Lola and Harry are the most precious dogs I've ever had! It makes me feel so good knowing that I've brought as much happiness into their lives as they have brought into mine. You can tell they are grateful to be saved, their loving kisses and constant need for snuggling make me feel like I'm their true Saviour! It warms my heart as I watch them react to every new experience of their lives outside a cage! And the adoption fee for rescue animals, although it may be a bit costly, is well worth the money, especially when you know it's for a good cause. I will NEVER buy another animal from a pet store or breeder. You can find absolutely any dog you desire at a shelter or rescue group, and it's so much more gratifying.

The opportunity to buy stamps and help out causes near and dear to our hearts is an easy way to give back. I support the USPS's effort to contribute to the cause of Animal Rescue.

We have 2 dogs rescued from animal shelters and one cat rescued from a rescue organization. We also have a cat that was born ferrel that we saved from a garage. He is the most awesome animal ever!

I have 2 cats that were headed for the shelter if I hadn't adopted them as the owner was moving to Australia. I've owned numerous cats that I found or rescued, if I had the room I'd be a "crazy cat-lady" with dozens of them. My daughter got a cat at our local shelter last year. My parents always nuetered our pets and I do the same. As for if they're happier, I think so - my ex had a female Siamese when we first met and it went through heat once before I told him to get her spayed. She was much calmer and didn't have to go through that miserable experience (and neither did we! Do you know what a Siamese in heat sounds like?!?) I love these stamps and pre-ordered them for myself, my daughter & my mom and also order some of the other merchandise. The photographs are so beautiful, they really capture the personalities of these gorgeous animals.

We adopted our cat, Mystic, in 2002 when the Spay/Neuter stamps were issued. She is very much a part of the family, and is not at all the spoiled princess she appears to be!! :)

We've had our cat "Shakeyra Paige"..."Paige" for short, for about 8 years now. She is a beautiful calico cat, and was placed in a shelter when the former owner died of cancer. Our son adopted her from the shelter when he was in college. When he moved out of state, guess who got the cat! :)
We don't know what we'll ever do without her! She is just "one of the family" and has brought us great joy and alot of laughs!

I adopted my cat, Margarita, from the Siamese Rescue Mission. She was just the most beautiful thing when I saw her. She follows me everywhere! She enjoys being loved.

All our cats and one dog have been adopted from a shelter. With so many animals to choose from you always find the one the is best for you, in fact our second to the last cat we adopted picked us. As we were walking by her cat looking at all the cats and started to continue on, she brought her paw out of her cage and tapped us on the head to let us know she wanted attention. She was a great and affectionate cat along with all our others animals, and they come neutered or spayed so that's one cost you don't have to worry about.
