Suggestion 1 for USPS fuel cost reduction
The Postal Service should be the first agency to shift to Hydrogen in their truck and delivery fleet. The USPS, having the largest civilian fleet, would be the best venue for integrating this technology into American culture. The Department of Energy and the U.S. Postal Service should team together to initiate the U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen Energy Program
Suggestion 2 for USPS fuel cost reduction
The USPS should negotiate with the unions to shift to a four (4) day work week at their Processing and Distribution Facilities and Centers to reduce employee fuel usage. All it would take would be to convince the union to go to a four day/ten hour day. The union would have to agree to add language to the contract to remove overtime relative to the two hour increase. This might not help the Post Office reduce usage, but it would set an example for others to follow in reducing consumption.
Set a day for all to boycott just exxon and opec suppliers. Tell everyone to get gas a couple of days before the boycott and really get it out to the media. That's my thoughts anyway.
An old country song by Johnny Cash contains these lyrics: “How high’s the water, Mama? Six feet high and risin’.” Someone could make a fortune on this song again by re-phrasing the words to: “How high’s the gas, Mama? $4 a gallon and risin’!” But with all the flooding in the country, the timing is probably not right.
We should reduce our dependence on oil and incorporate more electric delivery vehicles into our city fleet. Seems to me I’ve read information that we’ve been testing them for awhile. Has there been a report on this? I’m the first to admit I’m no expert in this field, but at $4 a gallon and risin’, one would think we should be able to pay for this new fleet in a relatively short time. We can be a leader in this country by making the switch, and not only could we save $, but it would help the environment as well with less air pollution.
Not only are we seeing skyrocketing fuel cost, but mail volume is dropping dramatically. It is the Perfect Storm and there is no need for us all to go down with this ship. Now is the time to consider 5 day delivery. By this I mean Monday thru Friday. By efficient management of the mail and employees, Mondays and days after holidays would be a challenge but doable. The unions need to accept that tough times require tough decisions. Step up and accept the inevitable.

Eliminate saturday delivery. eliminate one sixth the fuel, one sixth the work force, and a good cunk of the carbon foot print!
