"Take your Congressman to work" day

Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) visited his local Post Office in American Fork, UT, to get a better understanding of postal issues.

Among other things, The staff at the office talked to him about PO Box delivery, rural and city delivery differences, and how the economy has affected the Postal Service.

Do you think this is a good idea? Have any of you done the same thing? Comment here.

I think this is a great idea. I would rather see them in work clothes actually experiencing the work. If they put in as long a day as most of our workers, they would have more respect for what is actually accomplished with the declining workforce.

This is one of the best ideas I have seen. I hope more congressman visit the offices and I hope some of them spend the day with a carrier. These are our lawmakers that are passing the laws we have to abide by. This is the only wat for them to understand what we do.

Nothing like going to the source for the right information. The higher up in the chain....the more distorted the information. :(

Love this! I wish there was such a thing for all business. I work in public broadcasting, and I would love, love, love to take a congressman to work so s/he could listen to the calls I get from folk who rely on public broadcasting because they can't afford cable or satellite. And they can't afford to donate support, either :-(

The more Congress learns about USPS, the better. Then maybe they would no longer look at our agency as a cash cow with overpaid employees who are not seeking to save money and to save the Postal SErvice.

I think more congressmen should do this! And not just in the big city stations but the small rural offices. I would love to have my congressman visit my office so I could share my insights and explain the issues that my customers face in our rural town.

This is a fantastic idea. I agree that the only way our representatives can really know what we are all about is to "walk a mile in our shoes!"

We just had a congresswoman at our office but she didn't even come in and ask any questions or anything. She was only there because she started a campaign to get the office renamed for one of her biggest contributors to her campaign. What a crock of crap. They will never change they only care for themselves and I don't think they care if the Postal Service stays where it is at. But wait until they have to start really paying for all of the campaig crap they send out. That is idea maybe we should start charging for their mailings like the TV and Radio stations do when they advertise for their campaigns or belittle their opponents.
