Take your Congressman to Work Day, Part II

Last week, Congressman Jim Oberstar (DFL-Minn) visited the North Branch, MN Post Office.

He spoke with employees about a number of postal issues and thanked them for the great service they provide. He also talked about his work many years ago as a clerk in the House of Representatives Post Office while he was a student.

He also took special note of plastic mail trays and tubs, pointing out that they are made at Minnesota Diversified Industries.

MDI serves people with disabilities by providing them with employment opportunities in competitive businesses. MDI operates two facilities, at Hibbing and Grand Rapids, MN, in Rep. Oberstar’s district.

What do you think about elected members visiting Post Offices? What do you think would surprise them most?

I think it's a great idea for anyone, Congressman or otherwise, to see postal operations up close. Most people don't know or appreciate what it takes to get the mail out for an entire community. They see what ends up in their mailbox, but they don't think about what it took to get it there.

I agree, Let them see what it takes to get the mail out. Do not forget to tour the plants as well. They then see the whole picture. Mailbox to mailbox.

I'm sure it would be quite an education for anyone involved in politics.

Congress needs to learn more about USPS, so that it can remedy the deleterious effects of some of its past legislation and not continue to pass laws that hamstring and actively injure the Postal Service.

It's amazing how many elected officials still don't know the USPS does NOT operate with tax dollars. Also, they,
and most people, don't know the mail is sorted and transported 24 hours a day 365 days a year at many plants. They think the only jobs are carriers and window clerks - the ones they see - and don't know the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to get their mail delivered. I'd love to see elected officials, business leaders ad those in the support and HQ positions in the postal service spend a week each, walking/riding with our carriers working on each Tour in a plant or large post office, and working in a smaller facility where the clerks and postmasters do "everything."
