Five day delivery - what do you think?

Take the poll, found to on the upper right corner of this blog.

There are a few options.
1) Keep things the way they are. (We've done it for hundreds of years and it's not worth the PR and service hit.)
2) Skip Saturday delivery.(Catch up on Monday. Perhaps we could still deliver P.O. Boxes on Sat. Just no physical delivery)
3) Deliver on Saturday, but skip delivery on Tuesday (Tuesday is a light day anyway.)
4) Another possiblity. (Use the 'comment' tab below to tell me your alternative.)

Instead of going to 5 day delivery the post office needs to go to an evaluated route system similar to the one used by the rural routes. This would eliminate overtime and increase efficiency. Carriers would be rewarded for their hard work. This would also reduce the amount of money and time spent dealing with OT grievances to almost nothing. Several years ago the post office did a study on this but it was dropped.

5 day work week only afects carriers. Clerks will still be working on sat to put mail in PO boxes. And retail will remain open.

One area to save money is to allow those who wish to work part time to do so. Yet management and the unions forbid it. They would prefer to have maintenance personnel set on their butts and watch the clock until the end of their tour. Or worse, replace parts on mail processing equipment (MPE) that do not need to be replaced (reminds me of the army sergeant telling the private to dig a hole, then fill it back up).

I’d love to leave for the day on leave without pay after all the MPE routes are done, but instead management would rather you take vacation time, assuming they would even allow that.

There is no incentive to be more efficient because all you get is more time to do nothing or required to do tasks that do not improve production or the delivery of the mail.

This may not be right for everyone, but for those who choose to take the rest of the day off without pay could save the company a lot of money. And for those maintenance personnel that would prefer to watch the clock, they can continue to do so.

Should have been done along time ago, put all boxes on the street make it mandatory to eliminate walking routes that take way to much time. Saving enourmous amouts of fuel. Would cut down on alot of sick leave used by people who have a family and are just not going to miss things on saturday that they cant get off for.

Five day delivery? Sure, if mail volume keeps dropping off it makes since. However, just cramming the current volumes into five days really won't help or hurt our service. The key to our success in this venture though will be our ability to be flexible enough to move from 6 to 5 and back again if necessary.

I would definitely miss it, but I most certainly understand why it might have to happen. Make any changes necessary to keep the USPS solvent.

I was a supervisor of a large city delivery unit. M-F I had dozens of 8 hour routes. Saturday I could take most of those routes and give the carrier half of another route due to closed businesses. All my routes had closed businesses on Saturday. If I could cut out my own carrier's rotating day off I would have an easier time covering that route (I am down one on compliment but if we could take some of the PTF's and use them to cover multiple offices it would relieve a huge burden that many of us are experiencing) If I didn't have DOIS to be input on Saturdays then my clerk could actually do a decent job on my day off. Give us Saturday delivery free and you not only save money but you save a lot of us a lot of headaches.

Going 5-day would cause alot of people to lose their jobs. There are not many options in the work force these days.Cut management too many bosses making way too much money. Why give bonous for doing your job? Do you job for the pay you agreed to go somewhere else.In the smaller offices the senior clerk could do the job they pay a PM for.Consolidate the smaller offices.Save money on maintainence, power bills, and rent, not to mention PM pay.

Use ptf's to deliver parcels and Express on Saturdays to preserve our package business. They could also be used as routers to reduce Monday or day after Mon. Holiday overtime.

Don't stop sat delivery, We have more mail on sat than we do the rest of the week. Wed is the low mail volume day.

absolutely NOT>.. it is a business edge OVER the competition... WHY would we want to give it away.... how about removing $100+ middle management positions that in the olden days didn't need to be there... ie area vp's and their staff... isn't the electronic age supposed tomake communications easier... they why the layers of personnel?

five day delivery is cutting off our nose to spite our faces... it is ridiculous to CUT services.

How about cut some of the big guys saleries to save the money and leave the delivery days as they are, the carriers are already over burdened and under paid ! Cutting days will make it worse on carriers and thats about all it will solve

I think it would save alot of money, between rural delivery, Saturday help, and the star route, plus all the other hands it goes thru. Iknow y window is only open for 1 hours, ad then it makes very little money.

Not a good idea to give up something that other companies do not offer. We will just lose even more money. There are businesses that count on us for Saturdays. The best way to save money would be to have Congress dissolve the unions and fire the 1/4 of the employees that continually steal day after day from the USPS. These are the employees that show up and give less than a honest days work. The unions have to go because they encourage this behavior and protect these employees. It is sickening to see this behavior day after day.

I would much rather see Saturdays eliminated completely, if it could save enough money, rather than closing up our rural post offices.Every little town that loses their Post Office will eventually wither away to nothing.
For some of us...thats very sentimental. We love our little towns. Shut down on Saturday.

Customer service would help you a lot. I'm writing here because I could not find your phone number anywhere. I hope you read this.

Your 800 number is of little or no help beyond it's limited computer ability. There is no way to actually talk to a human.

When I think of abolishing the USPS I think a lot about the people who would lose their jobs. I would think nothing of turning off your computer. After being abused by it I look forward to the day that it dies.

I just had simple question to ask a human, but after leaving 6 or 7 messages and never getting a phone call back, I gave up. I look forward to the day that person loses their job as well.

Maybe you are one of those people who take a government job in the hope of destroying it for the benefit of the private sector. If this true you are succeeding wonderfully.

Otherwise you should put people who care back on the phones and behind the counter.

Basically, if you don't care about us, we wont care about you. And there is a lot of competition out there from companies that don't care....they will kick your butt.
