Deaf retail associate a benefit to USPS, customers

Joe Ortiz was born 46 years ago without any hearing, but that doesn’t keep him from serving customers from his retail counter in Frederick, MD.

The 25-year veteran was recently highlighted in a news story in his home town newspaper. According to the Frederick News Post, Ortiz uses signs at the counter to indicate he is deaf, but he reads lips and is able to speak clearly.

What do you think about this?

It's important that we have employees that can show that what some consider a disability doesn't mean they can't do a great job.

Kudos to Joe and to the Postal Service for accepting him for the person he is and the great job that he does.

Marvelous! How can this NOT be a good thing??

I am proud that Joe has shown that a disability can be circumvented, and achievement can be obtained. The USPS has a history of employing people with disabilities, and this is definitely a good choice.
