Blamed

In your experience, how often do we get blamed for missing mail?
What's the most outrageous experience you've ever had? Here's one great example.

I have had wives come in and ask that a certain bill be held for only her pickup- do not give to her husband. Of course, that is not our policy. I suggest that they pick up the mail, before their husband can get it.

I also have customers complain if they have no mail and the next day complain about the bills I put in their box- no pleasing them. I do not generate the bills, I just deliver them.

I had an elderly woman customer call and complain that she never received advertising mail like she used to.
The next day another lady called to say she was feed up getting so much "junk" mail all the time.

This isn't that uncommon, especially now that volumes are down. Many days some customers don't get any mail and they seem to think we misdelivered it because "I always get something." Not anymore! Several years ago I had a customer come in on a Wednesday expecting a Priority - the company told her it would be there on Wed. I explained Priority wasn't guaranteed and it may take 3 days. It wasn't there on Thursday either so she was sure we lost it or misdelivered it. It showed up on Friday and I checked the postmarked - it hadn't been mailed until Wednesday! I pointed this out to her and told her not to rely on when the mailer says something will "be there."

I had a young lady (PO Box customer) coming into my office almost daily irately complaining that we were returning her child support check. I assured her that it was not getting returned from our office; I never saw it, and I knew her by name, so it would have gone into her box even if addressed incorrectly. She finally found out that the agency was using an incorrect ZIP Code, which was causing her checks to be returned to sender.

Funny, she never did apologize for accusing us.

I have had the same situation as the first comment. I suggest they rent a Poat Office box and either put in a COA for herself only or contact the mailers that see wants to use the PO Box address about the change in delivery address. That way I get the revenue and see can get her mail at a safe and secure (secret)location. I have had to do this myself in the past due to my divorce.

I had an irate customer who was expecting a package that did not arrive. The package contained shelled black walnuts. After going through the normal questions and possible causes for delay, she assured me that she knew what had happened to her walnuts. She thought I (the PM) had taken them, and she hoped that I enjoyed my brownies!!! Well, I contacted the office where the package was supposed to have been mailed and had the supervisor talk to the carrier....and the carrier had in his mail on that very day this package being returned to the sender because she put the wrong city and ZIP on it!!! She remailed and my carrier delivered it the next day. The customer did not say a word about getting it. So the next time she came into the Post Office, I asked her if her brownies turned out good with the walnuts!!! She said she just froze them....At least she knew that I knew.

I had a new rural route customer come in & ask why he was not getting any mail. I asked him what his address was & realized it was vacant. I gave him a 4232 to fill out & told him he could do it now or at home & put it in the mailbox for the carrier. He told me he did not have a mailbox. Kinda hard to delivery mail to an address with no mailbox!!
