The Postal Serve-hisssssss

Not to rattle you, but this rattlesnake was found in the lobby of the Lukeville, AZ, Post Office.

What's the strangest thing you've ever seen in a Post Office?

I had a cat mailed once. Someone had dropped it into the lobby parcel drop. It was curled up and asleep in the workroom when I came in in the morning. Kinda of startled me when it meowed. Good thing it was friendly. MUCH better than a snake.

Me! One day I happened to glance at the windows while standing in line and was startled to see reflection. Looked like I'd dressed in the dark. And I hadn't combed my hair.

I had a watercolor brush in my old shirt pocket, one behind my ear, and one in my ponytail.

Something colorful caught my eye even though it was barely visible, folded into the canvas, in the corner of a hamper. It was a stamp on a dice, with the address on one side and a Las Vegas return address on another, written in the tiniest, but legible print. Couldn't believe that it made it to its proper destination without literally falling through a crack.

A bat hanging in the lobby at one office (I was asked if I had put it there as a joke)and a baby snake in a PO box in another post office I was working at. Good thing the person who had the box was a retired postal worker! A nice man got the snake out for us. And the rural carrier at the other office managed to get the bat outside, it flew away.

Having already turned out the lighting over the dump table, and leaving the area dimly light, I cleaned up the area after the morning work.
THERE...on the floor.....was a small,thin...light-ish brown "thing" lying in a sort-of coiled position.
I JUMPED BACK...and thought....SNAKE, baby snake.
I bravely kicked at with my foot...and the "thing" FLOPPED up on the top of my SHOE.
I QUICKLY shook my foot and the thing fell off...did not slither away, or anything...just laid there.
Once I maid it past the "thing" to the LIGHT SWITCH....THERE in BROAD DAYLIGHT...I'd been ATTACKED by a ......BROKEN RUBBER BAND!
(no, I'm BRUNETTE!) LOL

I once found a half plucked live chicken stuffed in a collection box. It was 3 am when I was collecting from the box and dark. All I saw coming up through the mail was it's head and neck. I wasn't even sure what it was until I jumped and it jumped out of my tub of mail. The chick's in the mail. True story

A Box of kittens with "Free" written on the flap was in my lobby one time. We didn't notice them until they got out!

Night crawlers. The box they were mailed in arrived broken open and we had worms crawling all over the Post Office.

I started to pick up a wad of dust that was on the floor but it moved, it was a tiny frog.

Someone was eating my peppermint Christmas candy and stashing the wrappers in a corner. I thought it was my rural carriers but eventually found a furry little creature, a mouse!

I used to have a customer who mailed unusual items, with addresses and postage on them: coconuts, messages in glass bottles, etc. One time, she mailed a bunch of party invitations written on beach balls, properly addressed with postage affixed. I went into the back office and discovered coworkers "playing ball" with her mail.

Early in the morning as I was setting up the front lobby I saw a ghost like man in the reflection of the window, I screamed and jumped and then realized it was our poster of the flat rate box guys' reflection!

I've had a baby snake in the back vestibule, that was a couple years ago. This year has been a wet year I had baby toads! On nice days I like to leave the front door to the lobby open so now and then I get a bird. Crazy things will fly in and then try to fly out my big front window (they are easy to catch when they are stunned!). Had a mouse take candy out of my basket at the counter and eat half of it and leave the rest for me.(I wasn't impressed with that!) We have had baby chicks get loose. I have had so many different things put in the drop box from rocks to candy wrappers to just plain trash, the worse is crickets!! I hate crickets!!

Large Saint Bernard. Friendly to me, slipped through the door with a customer, then laid in front of my retail counter and proceeded to growl at customers.

No one knew the owner, so I called animal control.

I was bring in the mail one day and heard what sounded like a wimmper. I didn't think anything of it and finished with my mail and unlocked the door to the lobby and there was a puppy tied to the door handle!!!! No note no nothing. So i called around to see if anyone was missing thee puppy and no one knew anything about the puppy. I made up posters for the lost puppy. I waited serveral weeks for someone to claim the puppy. (she stayed at home with me while i tried to find her owner) No one claimed her so we decided we were going to keep her and give her a home!!! She is about 65 lbs now and loves the kids!!
