Charging for Saturday deliveries

A reader in the USA Today newspaper suggested the Postal Service charge customers $10 a week for Saturday delivery.

Do you think this idea would work? Would you have customer's who would pay for such a service? Leave your comment here.

Not!! I can just hear the "bail-out" whining idiots jumping on their soap boxes and trumpeting the alarm from mountaintops far and wide - "The Post Office is going to Hell in a handbasket! What will they charge us extra for next - house delivery, versus the curb?" Who came up with this idea - some former airline CEO? How about we all try to find efficiencies in our own areas (take responsibility) instead of trying to find ways to "stick it to our customers"? I feel it is encumbent upon each one of us to pull together and make this work - it's up to us!

First of all WHY????? And second - in this economy what a stupid idea. Anybody in their right mind would laugh at us (which they already are anyway)Let's start cutting expenses like uncalled for OT to make up being off for two days and getting 4 hours of OT even during Christmas. Like clerks working thru their lunch hour and management NOT saying anything just because the clerk is "special". The Postal Service could do so much better if they just get there act together and act like a corporation AND not a good old boys network and treat some clerks and carriers like they walk on water because it is those clerks and carriers and management that are causing the mess that we are in. GET RID OF THEM

The POSTAL SERVICE is STUPID TO THINK PEOPLE WILL PAY...........QUIT Sat delivery and just do monday thru friday.....lot less people, benefits and on sat with no supervision who works anyway!!!

This sounds a lot like the premium forwarding service. People were getting their first class mail forwarded for free, then upper management wanted us to push PFS onto our customers. When they didn't bite....they changed the temporary forwarding process and tried to force the customers into PFS.

If they decide to end Saturday delivery, then simply end it. Customers who really want Saturday delivery will rent a POB.

The modern US Postal SERVICE is predicated on universal free delivery. If the American people want to change that mandate, fine, but do it in Congress, where the mandate originated. A tiered system of service may work for UPS and FedEx, but not for the Postal SERVICE.

NO... We would have the mail carrier come out on Sat. just to deliver to the customers that paid? Not a good idea at all, one or two pieces of mail at one box and 30 miles across town another box and so on.

That's Inconcievable!
Nt to mention just downright wrong for this business. We are a SERVICE to the people and should remain as such.

What a stupid idea. With the economy is such bad shape & most of us having to cut way back on all our spending. We have to squeeze every penny until it screams these days. Charging $10 a week for Saturday delivery will just make things even worse.

I would never pay. Reason being I am just as excited on Saturday as I am on Monday to open my mailbox and see a bill!!

ELIMINATE UPPER LEVEL MISMANAGEMENT

We as letter carriers, are also customers! I'm NOT paying to have my mail delivered on Saturday!

That has got to top the charts for the most idiotic idea yet. Get a clue....charging customers for mail delivery is not going to help our situation. Start cutting costs and people at the top and see how much better things start working.

Horrible, horrible idea!! First of all, most customers wouldn't pay, and if a route did have a few "Saturday customers", you'd still be paying a carrier and the mileage for the few pieces of mail being delivered. The $10 a week wouldn't cover the cost of the carrier's pay and VMA. How cost effective would it be if you only had one or two customers paying?

We need to be coming up with some new services that we can offer at the retail windows. The windows are already open and staffed; we just need more goods and services for our customers to spend their money on.

Oh, yeah, and trim the fat from the TOP of the organization, not the bottom.

How long has the Postal Service been using free Saturday delivery against UPS and FedEx. I have a feeling those two companies may have a field day with their advertising with either the loss of the delivery OR the charging for saturday delivery.

I have to concur with everyone Ben, I bet you're wishing now that you would of never even mentioned it!

No one would pay that.

Whyyyy not do away with free boxes (smaller communities). For those that don't - customers that live with in a quarter mile from the PO receive a free box. I have a few customers that live right across the road from where the 1/4 mile ends and the raise heck every year when they have to pay and the neighbor across the street doesn't.

The USPS will not pay a carrier to come in on Saturday. IF this ever happens, that mail will more then likely be delivered by the clerk/PMR working the window. They will close the office and then go out and deliver. Mileage alone would make this cost prohibitive.
